Background Information

Data from the Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) were used to develop a web-based Neonatal Outcomes Prediction Score (NOPS) at day 7, day 14 and day 28 for the outcomes of Mortality prior to discharge from NICU, mortality or major neonatal morbidities (including periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) defined as increased echogenicity in the periventricular white matter of the brain with or without cystic changes following ischemic insult; severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) defined as stage 3 or higher ROP or treated ROP and NEC stage 2 or 3 according to modified Bell’s staging criteria if it developed after model prediction day); death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia defined as receipt or oxygen or respiratory support at 36 weeks postmenstrual age or at discharge from level 3 NICU and Death before discharge or moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia defined as receipt of invasive or non-invasive positive pressure ventilation or nasal cannula oxygen of >100 cc/minute (100% oxygen) or nasal cannula delivered blended air and oxygen >21% minute of >1.5L/min at 36 weeks post menstrual age or at discharge from level 3 NICU. The development and internal validation of this model included of infants between 22⁰-29⁶ weeks’ gestation at birth admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) across Canada between January 1, 2010- December 31, 2023. Neonates >30 weeks’ gestation, those with major congenital anomalies and those receiving palliative care from birth were excluded. The model and calculator is derived from 26719 patients on day 7; 25317 patients on day 14; and 22386 patients on day 28.
